Choose the channel around the buying decision, not the novelty of the platform. Google Search Ads can capture explicit searches; ChatGPT Ads can reach relevant conversational situations. A sensible NZ comparison checks eligibility, usable geography, destination quality and qualified outcomes. It does not assume ChatGPT will be cheaper or replace a working Search campaign.

Compare Search with ChatGPT, not all of Google Ads

Google Ads includes different campaign types. Here we mean Google Search Ads, where keywords can match relevant searches and ads can appear on the Search Network. Google’s keyword guidance explains that relationship.

ChatGPT Ads use the context of a conversation for relevant sponsored placements. Context hints provide additional information about the offer; they are not a list of exact-match search triggers. See OpenAI’s context-hint guidance.

Both routes still require a useful destination. Neither format fixes an unclear offer, an unanswered phone or a broken form.

Three situations, three different decisions

1. An urgent local need

Illustrative business: an Auckland repair operator with limited coverage and capacity.

A person searching for a specific repair nearby is expressing a direct need. Our starting recommendation would be to assess Google Search demand and the existing enquiry path before diverting resources to a new channel. The landing page should make service area, availability and the contact action unambiguous.

A ChatGPT test needs its own reason to exist: a relevant customer situation, eligible offer, workable location settings and enough operational capacity. “People use AI now” is not a sufficient campaign hypothesis. Do not split a constrained budget until each proposed test could produce a decision you can act on.

2. A planned activity with several constraints

Illustrative business: a provider of bookable indoor family activities.

A buyer may be weighing ages, weather, travel time and session availability together. We would consider whether a ChatGPT placement can introduce a suitable option during that decision, while Search captures people already looking for the activity or venue type.

Keep the promise consistent across both channels. The destination should answer suitability and availability before asking for a booking. Record actual booking quality; a high volume of enquiries for ages the activity cannot accommodate is not success.

3. An online product chosen for a particular use

Illustrative business: a NZ shop selling compact desk accessories.

Search could capture specific product requests. A ChatGPT test might address a broader situation, such as fitting a workspace into a shared room. These are different entry points, so the ad and destination should not be identical by default.

Use a relevant product or collection page with dimensions, compatibility and fulfilment details. Do not assume product-feed location controls match those of other campaign types: OpenAI currently specifies country-level targeting for new product-feed campaigns in its campaign setup guide.

What would make us defer ChatGPT Ads?

We would pause the recommendation when the offer is ineligible, the usable geography is too broad, the destination is unfinished, or the business cannot distinguish a genuine opportunity from a low-quality enquiry. For example, current OpenAI policies restrict health, financial and legal services outside the US. NZ advertiser access is not an exemption. Check the advertising policies before developing the campaign.

We would also protect a proven channel when the business cannot afford the operational uncertainty of a new test. That is a commercial judgement, not a claim that one platform is universally better.

How to compare without misleading yourself

Write the success rule before launch. Use the same definitions for a qualified lead or completed sale across both channels, and record the period and offer being compared.

QuestionComparison rule
Did the right person respond?Classify geography, requested service and purchase suitability, not just form count.
Did the website do its job?Check destination visits and completed actions separately.
Did an enquiry become business?Record the later booking or sale; do not rename all leads as customers.
Is the comparison fair?Record differences in dates, offer, geography, availability and tracking.
Should we continue?Use the agreed test boundary and lead quality, including the cost of staff follow-up.

Do not add platform-reported conversions together and assume they represent different people. Attribution systems can assign credit differently. Use your own lead or order records to reconcile outcomes; the KWD measurement walkthrough shows the distinction between event dispatch and attributed results.

Small samples can suggest a question to investigate, but cannot establish a reliable industry benchmark. OpenAI notes the developing nature of the channel in its advertiser FAQ. We would not promise lower acquisition costs based on the platform being new.

A practical next step

Choose one customer decision and one measurable outcome. Complete the readiness checklist, then compare that brief with your existing Search activity. KWD offers both ChatGPT Ads management and Google Ads management, so the recommendation can start with the business rather than a preselected channel.
